This is a cool interlude before one bursts through the beech hedge into the hot garden. There are two lines of pleached limes, Tilia platyphyllos 'Rubra'. Originally these were under-planted with black tulips but those were replaced with the two-tone Muscari latifolium. When the sea of pale and dark blue disappears, we replant with a pale heliotrope called Dame Alice de Hales, which flowers from late May until the first frost. In winter the new growth on the limes from the previous summer are bright red and wonderful when seen against snow in winter sunshine.
