An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to work in one of England’s finest gardens. Set around a Grade II* 16th Century Hall, Wollerton Old Hall is an important modern garden in the English Garden tradition with echoes of Arts and Crafts. Covering 4 acres, it consists of a series of linked garden rooms, each filled with many of our collections of clematis, dahlias, roses and salvias. Distinctive beech, box and yew topiary are dotted throughout and underpin the garden's design. It is well known for the use of colour, scale and form. It is vital the new Head Gardener understands the owners' ethos and vision.
The garden regularly features in printed publications and has appeared on numerous TV programmes including BBC Gardeners' World on several occasions. Our annual public opening attracts tens of thousands of visitors, as well as hosting numerous groups by appointment throughout the year. We have a growing presence on social media, and in the past two years, have been nominated for two major garden awards.
You will have the responsibility to lead and inspire a small team as well as effectively manage an established and dedicated volunteer group, ensuring that the highest standards of presentation and maintenance are undertaken. Experience of working in a public garden would be an advantage.
As a public face for the garden, our successful candidate will also deliver tours, talks and workshops to external audiences and visitors. Knowledge and ability to run social media platforms is essential, as is being computer literate. You must be able to prioritise and understand annual work schedules.
This is a demanding and physical role, where you will get your hands dirty!
We would like you to possess;
• a relevant horticultural qualification HND, BSc, RHS Level 3
• excellent horticultural knowledge
• experience of working in a garden open to the public
• PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates
• a good understanding of COSHH and current Health & Safety legislation
• a good understanding of machinery
• excellent written and verbal communication skills
• a full clean driving licence
You must be;

• confident with a positive attitude
• proactive with a flexible approach
• able to use your initiative
The position is full time
(live-out) 40 hours per week. Flexibility required to work occasional weekends & bank holidays.
Annual leave 20 days, plus public holidays (with a break between Christmas & New Year).
Salary negotiable depending on experience.
